CAMBRIDGE, USA, Sept. 30, 2026 - Margaret Hamilton, the computer scientist who led software development for NASA's Apollo lunar program, has died at the age of 90.[1] She died on 30 September 2026, according to MIT.[2] Hamilton led the MIT engineering team that developed the flight software for the Apollo lunar landing program.[3] Software created by her team enabled the safe lunar landing of astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.[4] During the 1969 Apollo 11 lunar descent, Hamilton's software prioritized critical tasks during a computer overload and allowed the landing to proceed.[5] A memorial service will be held in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in spring 2027.[6] Impact Insight. Flight software lets a spacecraft make decisions faster than people on the ground can, and the Apollo guidance computer was one of the first to prove the idea. The link to planetary defense is indirect: deflection missions rely on the same principle, with a spacecraft steering itself onto a small asteroid in the final hours before impact.
