SpaceX launches 21 military satellites into orbit AI illustrationhow this picture was madeVANDENBERG, USA, Oct. 10, 2026 - SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 from Vandenberg Space Force Base on 10 October carrying 21 data-transport satellites for the US Space Development Agency,[1] five days after an abort on 5 October.[2] The agency said all 21 satellites reached orbit.[3]
In Florida, SpaceX subsidiary Coastal Connect Services applied in September to the state's Public Service Commission to build a 32.4-mile natural gas pipeline in Brevard County.[4] The 16-inch line would link SpaceX's Cape Canaveral facilities to the Florida Gas Transmission network.[5] SpaceX said trucks and local pipelines cannot keep up with Starship's growing launch needs at the Cape.[6] It has already applied for an 8-mile pipeline at its Starbase complex in Texas.[7]
The pace gap with rivals is wide. Falcon 9 flew about 160 to 170 times in 2025 and is projected to match that in 2026.[8] Relativity Space's Terran R, which targeted a late-2026 debut from Cape Canaveral LC-16, is widely expected to slip to 2027,[9] and Rocket Lab, Firefly Aerospace, United Launch Alliance and Blue Origin have yet to reach the cadence the industry wants.[10] In Europe, MaiaSpace is developing the reusable Maia rocket, which could halve launch costs from 2027.[11]
These follow two milestones covered on this paper: Starship reached orbit on its 14th flight on 28 September, deploying Starlink satellites before an early splashdown,[12] and a Falcon 9 launched NASA's Crew-13 to the International Space Station on 1 October.[13]Related coverage:SpaceX Starship reaches orbit on 14th test flight · Crew-13 Dragon docks with the International Space StationImpact Insight. Starship's Raptor engines burn liquid methane with liquid oxygen, and natural gas is mostly methane, so a pipeline is the cheapest way to supply the volumes a high launch rate demands.
