Dwarf planet candidate discovered in outer solar system AI illustrationhow this picture was madeLA SERENA, Chile, Nov 1, 2026 - The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has detected its first dwarf planet candidate, designated 2026 ED138, NOIRLab announced on 27 October 2026.[1]
The large icy celestial object was found beyond the orbit of Pluto. It orbits 46 astronomical units from the Sun, equal to 6.9 billion kilometres.
This is one of the first confirmed scientific discoveries returned by the new observatory, which operates in northern Chile.
Astronomers formally presented the candidate object at the October 2026 meeting of the American Astronomical Society Division of Planetary Sciences.[2]Impact Insight. A dwarf planet candidate is a body large enough to have formed a roughly spherical shape under its own gravity, but which has not cleared other debris from its orbital path. This early discovery demonstrates the Rubin Observatory is performing as intended for its planned full sky survey, which will map and catalogue millions of solar system objects over the next ten years.LA SERENA, Chile, 1 de noviembre de 2026 - El Observatorio Vera C. Rubin ha detectado su primer candidato a planeta enano, designado 2026 ED138, anunció NOIRLab el 27 de octubre de 2026.[1]
