WASHINGTON, US, Oct. 26, 2026 - NASA has confirmed the Swift space telescope will undergo uncontrolled atmospheric reentry to Earth within the next several weeks.

The telescope completed its final scientific observation on 20 October 2026, at an altitude below 275 kilometres.

NASA stated most of the spacecraft will disintegrate during reentry. Surviving fragments carry very low risk of harm to people.

A planned capture and reboost mission for Swift was abandoned by NASA and Katalyst Space in August 2026, making the uncontrolled reentry unavoidable.

Impact Insight. Uncontrolled reentry is the standard end of life for most orbital spacecraft when no active disposal manoeuvre can be performed. All large orbital objects are tracked continuously through reentry by global space surveillance networks. This event will produce additional real world data on atmospheric breakup behaviour that improves risk modelling for future uncontrolled reentries.
