TUCSON, United States, Oct. 22, 2026 - The NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory has released a new astronomical image from its ComCam test camera, published to mark two years since testing for the facility commenced.

The image released this week shows the Seagull Nebula, captured using the ComCam engineering camera. NOIRLab also published a separate ComCam image of the Sh 2-292 nebula on the same date.

ComCam was mounted on the observatory's Simonyi Survey Telescope in 2022. It operated for seven weeks during late 2024 before being removed that December.

Impact Insight. Commissioning cameras are used to calibrate telescope optics, alignment and sensor performance before the primary science instrument is installed. For large ground observatories, successful test imaging confirms the system will reliably capture consistent survey data once full operations begin. The Rubin Observatory is built to conduct the most complete all-sky astronomical survey ever attempted, so validated performance during testing establishes baseline confidence for the decade of data it will produce. For planetary defense, Rubin's survey is expected to find large numbers of new near-Earth asteroids, so a well-calibrated telescope matters directly.
