WASHINGTON, USA, Sept. 6, 2026 - NASA confirmed on September 6, 2026, that a small asteroid would enter Earth's atmosphere that day. The asteroid, approximately 80 centimeters to 1 meter in diameter and designated CERNQ52, was expected to enter the atmosphere over the Indian Ocean near northwestern Australia at 16:07 UTC on 6 September. NASA stated there was no danger to Earth, astronauts, or satellites from the asteroid's passage, and modern tracking has ruled out an impact for at least the next century.

Impact Insight. Objects about a metre across strike Earth's atmosphere several times a year and almost always burn up harmlessly, often unseen over the oceans. This is planetary defense at work: spotting a small asteroid hours before it arrives tests the same detection and orbit-prediction systems that would warn of a larger, dangerous object.
